Major Rejects IRA

LONDON () -- Rejecting recent overtures from supporters of the Irish Republican Army, Prime Minister John Major said Thursday that they will not be permitted to join talks on the future of Northern Ireland until a permanent cease-fire is declared.

Major confirmed contacts with John Hume, the senior Catholic member of Parliament from Northern Ireland. Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams had sought a pledge that his party could enter talks immediately after a cease-fire.

"We have made it absolutely clear throughout those exchanges that the IRA and Sinn Fein should give up violence once and for all and commit themselves to exclusively peaceful means,'' said Major.
