Italian Leader Charged

ROME ) -- An Italian magistrate recommended Monday that Prime Minister Romano Prodi should be tried for alleged abuse of office during his chairmanship of giant state holding company IRI.

Prodi, who has led a center-left government since May, reacted calmly to the news, telling journalists he had done no wrong and had full confidence in Italy's judicial system.

The requested indictment, lodged with court officials in Rome by deputy public prosecutor Giuseppa Geremia, relates to alleged irregularities in the sale by IRI in October 1993 of food unit Cirio to a southern consortium, Fis.Vi.
