Gun Vote Uncertain

LONDON () -- Prime Minister John Major faces a tight parliamentary vote Monday on plans for a limited ban on pistols drawn up after the massacre of 16 children and their teacher by a crazed gunman at a school in Scotland.

Major faces a rebellion from a handful of ruling Conservative members of parliament who back demands by opposition parties and families of the victims from the Scottish town for a total ban on handguns.

The government hopes for support from Northern Ireland MPs and is confident of squeezing the ban through. But with an overall majority of just one in the 651-seat parliament, an embarrassing government defeat cannot be ruled out.
