Ford Set to Introduce New Galaxy Van

In what could be the first step toward a multipurpose vehicle that really lives up to its name, Ford is introducing a four-wheel-drive version of the Galaxy minivan.

The new addition to Ford's range will use Volkswagen's Synchro four-wheel-drive transmission in conjunction with the V6, 2.8 liter engine that comes from the same source. A premium in the range of $1,500 over the front-wheel drive vehicle is likely, which is not bad considering the added technology and extra components involved.

With a four-wheel-drive Galaxy in the range, Ford could easily make the jump to a road-going version of its K2 Concept car, a 4x4 Galaxy that toured motor shows last year and sported carbon fiber bumpers and Teflon-coated leather seats for extra protection in rough-and-tumble situations. It also had a satellite-navigation system, and a winch to rescue serious situations.

Such a project would create a true multipurpose vehicle. Not only would there be unlimited rough-ground capability, but unlike big off-roaders it would drive in a similar fashion to a regular car and have plenty room inside for people and luggage.
