Finn Unions Boycott Russian Trucks

COMBINED REPORTS

HELSINKI -- Two Finnish trade unions Monday started to boycott Russian trucks mainly due to what they call bad treatment of Finnish trucks at Russian borders.

The powerful union of truckers and transport workers, including stevedores AKT, stopped all loading and unloading of Russian trucks, and the union of food workers said they will support their colleagues.

The union said Russian officials at border stations impose irregular fees on crossing trucks, delay the handling of cargo, offer poor safety measures and require bribes.

"We cannot accept what the Finnish drivers must go through at the border," said Matti Vehkaoja, secretary of the transport workers union.

"We want to send a message to both the Russian and Finnish ministries of transportation," Vehkaoja said. "They have not taken the problem seriously enough." ()
