Emergency Landing

MOSCOW () -- A U.S. military transport plane carrying American arms inspectors made an emergency landing in southern Siberia Sunday, a news agency reported.

The C-141 plane with 11 people aboard returned to the Ulan-Ude airport near Lake Baikal minutes after taking off, Itar-Tass said.

Reinforced fire and ambulance brigades were standing by near the runway, but the planedmade a smooth landing with no incidents.

It appeared that a minor technical problem forced the plane to return to Ulan-Ude. It took off in less than an hour after the American crew examined the aircraft, Itar-Tass said.

The plane was carrying a group of U.S. inspectors overseeing the implementation of Russia-U.S. disarmament agreements.
