Election Rejection

TIRASPOL, Moldova () -- Moldova's breakaway Transdnestr republic has rejected even a limited participation in presidential elections to be held this month in Moldova, authorities said Tuesday.

In a message to Russian authorities and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Transdnestr's leader Igor Smirnov said that any participation in the elections would be "useless," the republic's foreign relations service said.

Smirnov said the vote "could be used to destabilize the economic and political situation in Transdnestr."

Smirnov was reacting to a proposal put forward by the speaker of Moldova's parliament Pyotr Luchinsky after Transdnestr's decision to boycott the Nov. 17 vote.
