Carrier May Turn Hotel

SEOUL () -- A South Korean company that bought a retired Russian aircraft carrier for scrap metal said Thursday it may be turned into a floating hotel.

Young Distribution Co., a Seoul-based trading company, said it was negotiating with the Russian Defense Ministry for permission to turn the 37,000-ton Kiev-class Minsk into a hotel.

The Central Bank has stripped more than 200 banks of their licenses this year. More than 500 banks have had their licenses revoked since 1994.

Plans to scrap the 37,000-ton Kiev-class Minsk have prompted protests from South Korean environmentalists, who fear pollution to the coastal waters.
