Benfica Derails Lokomotiv To End Russian Cup Hopes

Benfica beat Lokomotiv 3-2 in Moscow on Thursday night to go through to the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners Cup with a 4-2 aggregate score.

Lokomotiv, which played with 10 men for most of the match after rightback Sergei Gurenko was sent off for two bookable offenses, was the last Russian club to be eliminated from European club competition.

Nevertheless, the railroad team gave the few loyal fans that braved the dreary Moscow weather some hope with a quick goal by Andrei Solomatin in the ninth minute.

Right after the interval, it looked as if Lokomotiv striker Oleg Garas had put the hosts 2-0 up, but the Danish referee disallowed the goal for offsides.

The Portugese struck right back with Nica Panduru equalizing in the 48th minute.

Garas eventually found the net 10 minutes later, but this was the last success for the Muscovites.

Benfica took over in the last 20 minutes, first with Brazilian international Donizeti scoring from close range then captain Joao Pintu sealed victory with two minutes remaining.

"I have to give Lokomotiv credit for the hard fought match," said Benfica's coach Paulo Autuori. "We did not panic after the first goal, and knew that we would get our chances in the second half."
