Aviation Regiment Split

OKTYABRSKOYE, Ukraine () -- Bitter commanders began disbanding the Black Sea Fleet's last aviation regiment in Crimea on Tuesday, dividing up its aging, Soviet-era bombers between Russia and Ukraine.

The closure of the 943rd regiment's base near the Crimean village of Oktyabrskoye is part of a hotly debated divorce settlement for the coveted fleet.

Lieutenant General Valery Yurin, top aviation comander for the Russian fleet, spoke dejectedly at Monday's ceremony for disbanding the regiment.

"The newest planes had practically nothing to do. They'll be dismantled and will never be airborne,'' he said.
