Australia Beats Irish to Extend Win Record

DUBLIN -- Australia remained unbeaten after weathering a furious Irish onslaught in bitterly cold conditions at Lansdowne Road.

The Wallabies trailed 12-9 with 13 minutes left before finally emerging with a 22-12 win that extended their unbeaten European tour record to nine matches.

The Irish threatened for long periods to cause a major upset. But a halftime lead of 9-6 proved an insufficient cushion when they turned to face the wind in the second half, and Australian full-back Matt Burke coolly dug his side out of trouble with five penalties and a conversion of David Knox's 78th minute try.

Two tries from new cap Andy Gomarsall helped England to a 54-21 win over Italy at Twickenham on Saturday. The scrum-half, one of five new players in the England team, scored the first of their seven tries in the 18th minute when he bustled over from close range.
