Armenia Premier Quits

YEREVAN, Armenia () -- Armenia's prime minister announced his resignation Monday, and President Levon Ter-Petrosyan immediately named his successor.

Grant Bagratian, 38, who headed the Armenian government since February 1993, declined to give any reasons for his resignation.

"This is my own business and that of the president,'' he said, according to Interfax. He added that he was proud of being able to work in the government, and was "leaving this post as a happy man.''

Ter-Petrosyan signed his resignation into effect later Monday and named Armen Sarkisian, 43, as the country's new prime minister, the presidential press service said. Sarkisian, Yerevan's ambassador in Britain, has been in Armenia for the past three weeks.
