Aid Group to Zaire

OTTAWA () -- The Rwandan government has agreed to allow aid groups to cross over into eastern Zaire for 10 days to investigate the needs of refugees and the displaced, Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy said Thursday.

He told reporters the assurances were given to Canadian Lieutenant General Maurice Baril, the head of a planned UN mission who was also given permission to tour the area personally. A lack of information had been one of the stumbling blocks to mounting the rescue mission.

Reacting to the declaration by Zaire's information minister, Boguo Makeli, that the mission's planned air drops of relief aid were unacceptable, Axworthy said he was not sure the minister spoke for the government.
