AC Milan Calls Up Its 'Old Guard'

ROME -- AC Milan might have a new generation of champions waiting in the wings, but coach Oscar Washington Tabarez can still turn to the Old Guard in his hour of need.

Just 24 hours after signing Sweden's Jesper Blomqvist from IFK Gothenburg, Tabarez is set to recall veterans Franco Baresi and Roberto Baggio for Milan's Sunday serie A showdown with Juventus.

Baresi's reassuring presence will restore confidence and cohesion to a side that has lost three league matches in eight outings as well as twice in the Champions' League.

"We have to start playing like a team again," said Baresi, expected to retire at the end of the current season.

Baggio's seven goals in league and cup matches this season should win him back an automatic first-team place.

The former Juventus player was relegated to the substitute's bench by the prolific partnership between Liberian George Weah and Marco Simone.

"I've refound my goal-scoring form," said Baggio this week, "and I'm really motivated about playing against my old teammates."
