Yeltsin Cancels All Business Meetings

As preparations for his heart bypass surgery entered "their final stage," President Boris Yeltsin on Monday canceled all meetings for the rest of the week so he could undergo a series of medical tests.

Presidential spokesman Sergei Yastrzhembsky told reporters Yeltsin had canceled the meetings on the advice of his doctors, adding that the tests were a "planned" series of procedures prior to his heart bypass operation, Agence France Presse reported.

He said everything was proceeding "as normal." No firm date has yet been set for the operation, but Kremlin doctors have hinted it will take place in mid- to late-November.

"The preparations have entered their final stage," the Kremlin spokesman said. "A whole series of different tests is due to take place in the next few days. In connection with that and on the advice of doctors, all working meetings of the president this week have been canceled."

Yeltsin, who is staying at the Barvikha government sanitorium outside Moscow, had previously been holding daily meetings with officials.

"It was planned that in the run-up to the operation, the number of working meetings would be reduced," Yastrzhembsky said. He added that Yeltsin's weekly Tuesday meeting with Prime Minister
