U.S. Troop Pullout

SARAJEVO () -- U.S. troops have begun to pull out of Bosnia after a 12-month peacekeeping tour, leaving behind a calm but still politically unstable country and questions over how to keep the peace once they have gone.

"Three units left their bases in the Tuzla area on Thursday," U.S. spokesman in Slavonski Brod, Captain Steve Metz said. "A hundred more people are scheduled to leave tomorrow."

Their departure, which began Wednesday, is the start of a large-scale withdrawal of American troops in line with U.S. President Bill Clinton's promise to pull them out by the end of IFOR's mandate Dec. 20.
