Unlucky Cat Delays Flight 7 Hours

KAZAN, Central Russia -- A black cat hiding among the wires and cables of a Russian airplane delayed a Kazan to Moscow flight for seven hours, Itar-Tass reported Tuesday.

The cat, whose name is Shurik, escaped from its master's carry-on bag while the flight was boarding and dashed into the cockpit.

When everyone began chasing Shurik, he wormed into a compartment under the flight deck crammed with instruments, wires and cables.

Technicians tried for hours to extricate the culprit without success until one of them hit on the idea of using compressed air, Itar-Tass said, quoting the pilot, Vladimir Seryozhkin.

It said Shurik was blown out of his hiding place and spent the flight, which left seven hours late, traveling in a dark, closed box.

Passengers often travel with animals in their arms or in open containers on Russian airlines, and it is not unusual to see a dog wandering down the aisles in midflight.
