United's Turkish Delight

ISTANBUL -- Manchester United took a significant step toward the quarterfinals of the European Cup with a well-worked 2-0 win over Fenerbache.

Goals by David Beckham after 55 minutes and French skipper Eric Cantona five minutes later ended United's recent bad run of away form in Europe and moved them to within a point of Champions League Group C leaders Juventus, which drew 1-1 with Rapid Vienna.

Ten minutes into the second half, Cantona swept the ball into Ole Solskjaer's path as United caught the Turks light at the back. He drew both defenders to him, then freed Beckham for the 21-year-old to drill his right-foot shot past goalkeeper Rustu Recber.

The Turks were still reeling when Cantona scored from a simple tap-in.

Turkish fans attacked the Manchester team bus on its way to Istanbul airport afterward.

A stone smashed through a window of the bus, showering players with glass, though injuring none.

In Vienna, Juventus took the lead against Rapid Vienna when Christian Vieri profited from an error by Polish forward Andrzej Lesiak.

Lesiak made amends with a stunning 20-meter free-kick that thundered through the Juventus defensive wall and into the net.
