Ukraine Fights Bribe-Taking

KIEV -- Ukraine has created a new force to police the police because of an alarming rise in corruption, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

The ministry's new internal security force will make a special drive against bribe-taking, the most common crime committed by Ukrainian police. The ministry did not say how big the new force would be or provide any other details.

So far this year, 250 officers have been convicted of economic crimes, and hundreds of others have been charged, Interior Minister Yury Kravchenko told a news conference.

Overall, more than 9,000 Ukrainian officials at various levels have been convicted of economic crimes this year, most involving bribe-taking or forgery.
