Training at Chernobyl

MOSCOW () -- Some 2,300 firefighters from across Ukraine took part in training exercises near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant Tuesday.

Thirty brigades practiced battling blazes in the woods around the plant, where forest fires broke out this spring in villages abandoned after the 1986 accident that destroyed one of the plant's reactors and contaminated vast areas.

Firefighters trained for working around delicate radioactive equipment at the plant, which still has two operating reactors, said Mikhailo Bohdanos, deputy director of Chernobyl's emergency service.
