Thailand Probes Steel Dumping

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Thailand is investigating allegations by domestic steel producers that Polish and Russian steelmakers are dumping their products in the Thai market, a senior Commerce Ministry official said Monday.

"We have already sent questionnaires to Poland and Russia to ask them about their market and export prices," said Thawatchai Sophastienphong, deputy director-general of the ministry's department of business economics.

In August, representatives from Siam Yamato Steel, a producer of structural steel, and Sahaviriya Steel Industries PLC, which makes hot-rolled coil and steel sheets, asked the Commerce Ministry to investigate the alleged dumping, in which countries price their exports below the local market.

Siam Yamato is a subsidiary of Thailand's giant conglomerate Siam Cement PLC.
