Sweden, Russia Meeting

MOSCOW () -- Swedish Prime Minister Goeran Persson met Wednesday with Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, discussing issues that ranged from the Baltics to uranium exports.

Chernomyrdin warned that Russia was prepared to use "all economic levers" to improve the lot of Russian-speakers in the former Soviet republics in the Baltics.

He complained that Baltic nations have "laws infringing upon the rights of ethnic Russians." According to Itar-Tass, Chernomyrdin said Persson was responsive to Russia's concerns.

"Russia is very impressed by Sweden's position on the Baltics," he said, according to Itar-Tass. "This position can influence the situation in the Baltic republics, changing it for the better."
