Soros Voices Concerns

MOSCOW () -- U.S. financier and philanthropist George Soros claimed Sunday that Russia's economy was "quite desperate" and the country was heading back toward totalitarianism.

In an interview on Russian television, Soros told the weekly program "Zerkalo" that he was very worried about the future of Russia, where his Soros Foundation has invested in projects worth more than $200 million.

"You have now a system of robber capitalism, which is a grotesque distortion of an open society," he said. "Unless there is some effort to put things in order, you will have a totalitarian regime, which means all my efforts will have been in vain."
