Skins Down Patriots for Fifth Win

FOXBORO, Massachusetts -- Gus Frerotte threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns and Henry Ellard caught eight passes, lifting the Washington Redskins to their fifth straight victory, 27-22 over the New England Patriots.


The Redskins (5-1), who share the NFL's best record, gave up 164 yards to Curtis Martin, whose two-yard TD run pulled the Pats within 24-22 with 5:33 left. But Martin took a two-yard loss on a potential game-tying conversion run.


Drew Bledsoe was 23-of-48 for 222 yards for the Patriots (3-3).


Steelers 20, Bengals 10. In Pittsburgh, Mike Tomczak's 32-yard touchdown pass to Kordell Stewart snapped a third-quarter tie, and Jerome Bettis eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the fifth straight game as the Steelers (5-1) posted a 20-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.


Dolphins 21, Bills 7. In Buffalo, Terrell Buckley snuffed a last-gasp drive by returning an interception 91 yards for a touchdown with 47 seconds remaining, and Miami used dominant defense to defeat Buffalo (4-2) 21-7.


The Dolphins (4-2), who broke a two-game skid, had seven sacks and four turnovers. Karim Abdul-Jabbar and Irving Spikes scored on short touchdown runs for Miami.


Jaguars 21, Jets 17. In Jacksonville, Nick Lowery joined the record books on a day his woeful New York Jets lost an 11-point lead and fell to 0-7 after a 21-17 loss to the Jaguars.


Lowery's 20-yard field goal in the fourth-quarter was the 374th in his career, moving him past Jan Stenerud as the NFL's all-time leader.


Panthers 45, Rams 13. At Carolina, Kerry Collins threw three touchdown passes, including two to tight end Wesley Walls, and Kevin Greene returned a fumble 66 yards for a score as the Panthers (4-2) routed the hapless St. Louis Rams 45-13.


Cowboys 17, Cardinals 3. At Dallas, Emmitt Smith ran for 112 yards and two TDs, including his 100th career rushing TD, as the Cowboys (3-3) welcomed back wide receiver Michael Irvin with a 17-3 victory over Arizona (2-4).


Oilers 23, Falcons 13. In Atlanta, rookie Eddie George had his third 100-yard game and Al Del Greco kicked three field goals to lead Houston (4-2) to a 23-13 victory over the 0-6 Falcons.


Saints 27, Bears 24. In New Orleans, Doug Brien's career-best 54-yard field goal with 1:44 left was the difference and Ray Zellars rushed for a career-high 174 yards as the Saints (2-5) recorded a 27-24 victory over Chicago (2-5).


Jim Everett completed 22-of-31 passes for 223 yards and two TDs for the Saints, but Dave Krieg was 19-for-28 for 247 yards and three TDs for the Bears.


Buccaneers 24, Vikings 13. At Tampa Bay, Trent Dilfer passed for 218 yards and three TDs, leading the Buccaneers (1-5) past the Minnesota Vikings 24-13.


Robert Smith rushed for a career-high 133 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for Minnesota (5-2).


Eagles 19, Giants 10. At New York, Gary Anderson kicked a go-ahead 29-yard field goal with 2:12 remaining and William Thomas returned a fumble 23 yards for a touchdown on the next play from scrimmage to give the Philadelphia Eagles a 19-10 victory over the Giants.


Rookie Amani Toomer returned a punt 65 yards in the second quarter for the Giants' lone TD.


Raiders 37, Lions 21. In Oakland, Jeff Hostetler threw for 295 yards and four TDs as Oakland raced to a 34-point lead and beat the Detroit Lions 37-21.


Scott Mitchell threw three three-quarter TDs for the Lions (4-3).
