Russians Chase Boats

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East () -- A Russian patrol vessel chased five Japanese fishing vessels out of Russian territorial waters near the Kuril Islands, border security officials said Thursday.

A border security spokesman, who declined to be named, said the Japanese vessels were detected Wednesday night and chased away by a Russian patrol boat.

Russia repeatedly accuses Japanese of violating its territorial waters in the Far East. Both nations claim the Kuril Islands, which were seized by the Soviet Union in the final days of World War II.

Russian authorities have still not decided what to do with five Japanese fishermen detained last week near the Kuril Islands.
