Russia Tests Missiles

MOSCOW () -- A ballistic missile launched by a nuclear submarine with Russia's Northern Fleet has hit a designated target in Russia's Far East, officials said Friday.

The missile was launched Thursday from a submarine in the Barents Sea, said Admiral Oleg Yerofeyev, the Northern Fleet commander.

A group of British Royal Navy ships were in the area during the launch and the "British Navy men were the first to congratulate the Northern Fleet sailors with success,'' Yerofeyev told Itar-Tass.

The launch was part of exercises of Russia's strategic nuclear forces, which also included a launch of a land-based Topol strategic missile from the Plesetsk site in northern Russia and two launches of missiles from strategic bombers.
