Rostelekom to Lower U.S. Calling Rates

Russian telecommunications company Rostelekom said in a statement it would lower the cost of telephone calls to the United States by 57 percent from Nov. 1 to Jan. 15.

Rostelekom said it had been able to lower tariffs because of measures taken to increase access to the network.

Between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., the tariff for one minute would be cut to 4,200 rubles, or $0.77, from 9,800 rubles. Daytime calls would cost 6,300 rubles instead of 14,700 rubles per minute, and weekend and holiday calls would cost 3,150 rubles a minute instead of 7,350 rubles.

The PRP Group, responsible for Rostelekom's public relations, said the volume of outgoing international calls from Russia was expected to rise in 1996 to 340 million minutes from 290 million minutes in 1995.
