Quake Hits Far East

MOSCOW () -- A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale rattled the Chukotka Peninsula in the Russian Far East on Friday, but no injuries or damage were reported, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

The quake occurred at 8:32 a.m., ministry spokeswoman Tatyana Timishenkova said.

The quake's epicenter was near the uninhabited northern shore of the Chukotka Peninsula, but tremors with a magnitude of 3 were registered in the towns of Egvekinot and Provideniya, Timishenkova said.
