Premier May Cancel Chechnya Trip

A planned trip to Chechnya by Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin could be put off following pro-independence comments by a separatist leader there, Itar-Tass reported Wednesday.

A recent statement by rebel leader Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev about the need "to fight and struggle for absolute freedom" from Russia could force the premier to delay a trip to the troubled region, reported Itar-Tass, citing informed government sources.

Chernomyrdin opposes full Chechen independence from Moscow.

The news agency said no final decision had yet been made.
