Pilot's Body Found

MOSCOW () -- Russian seamen recovered the body of a Swedish pilot soon after his jet crashed into the Baltic Sea and returned it to a Swedish coast guard ship, an official said Thursday.

The pilot's body was returned -- "in an appropriate naval mourning ceremony, with an expression of condolences" -- to the vessel Gotland, Russian navy spokesman Alexander Velideyev said.

The Swedish military Viggen jet crashed Wednesday, several hundred meters from the Peter the Great nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser -- one of Russia's newest and most sophisticated warships.

Sweden, which called the crash an accident, acknowledged that the pilot was scouting the new ship at the time.
