New Norway PM

OSLO () -- Thorbjoern Jagland was appointed prime minister of Norway on Friday, succeeding political veteran Gro Harlem Brundtland less than a year before his minority Labour government faces its next test at the polls.

King Harald V appointed Jagland, 46, and his new cabinet at a special session of the Council of State in the Royal Palace after accepting Brundtland's resignation.

Brundtland, 57, said in a surprise announcement on Wednesday that she was stepping down to give Labour a fresh start for the general election next September. Jagland as party leader has been groomed four years to become premier.
