Naked Ski Jump for 'The Eagle'

LONDON -- Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, the British Olympic ski jumper who plunged to a glorious last place in the 1988 Calgary Games, is planning to jump naked.

The 32-year-old intends to compete at next year's World Championships before bidding for gold at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan.

But before that, he wants to plummet down an icy slope and soar through the air wearing only a safety helmet, a pair of boots and skis.

"It'll be the ultimate buzz and if I tried it at the World Championships I could even get extra style marks," said Edwards, who won British hearts in Calgary with his eccentric amateurism, jam-jar spectacles and makeshift training methods.

"But I'll wait until it's a bit warmer so I don't get frostbite.

"The only problem is that it could be a little dangerous," he said.

"Snow is rather like sandpaper if you fall on it.

"The Eagle," who has already leapt from a ski run dressed only in his underpants, insists his 1998 Olympic bid is genuine.

"I've always been serious about my sport."
