MP Wants Cats Culled

CANBERRA () -- The Australian parliament was urged Thursday to draw up a program to eradicate the more than 20 million cats in the country by the year 2020.

The call, from government member of parliament Richard Evans, comes the week after a virus was released into the wild to try to kill around 150 million rabbits blamed for widespread environmental damage.

Evans told parliament that cats, not native to Australia, can easily turn wild and decimate indigenous wildlife. "I am calling today for the total eradication of cats in Australia," he said.

Wildlife experts say there are as many as 18 million feral cats in Australia and about three million others kept as pets.
