'Mole' Gets Bouquet

ST. PETERSBURG ) -- Signaling they are ready to deal with a would-be bomber who calls himself "the Mole," police arranged to have a bouquet of roses placed on the anchor's desk during a St. Petersburg Channel Five newscast.

Last week, police defused a bomb apparently planted by the Mole at St. Petersburg's Baltiisky Station. A note inside the bomb demanded that city authorities pay the Mole $100,000. Otherwise, it said, more bombs would be planted, and an intercity train bound to or from St. Petersburg and carrying foreigners would be derailed.

Police last week derided the Mole. However, during a Thursday evening broadcast of "Inform TV," police placed a bouquet of roses on the anchor's desk, as demanded by the Mole. Police will not comment on whether the Mole has responded.
