Ireland, Denmark Triumph

DUBLIN -- Striker Tony Cascarino made the most of his surprise call-up to score twice as Ireland beat Macedonia 3-0 in a their Group 8 qualifier. Cascarino scored his first in the 47th minute when he latched on to a poor headed back-pass by defender Zoran Jovanovski and fired into the right corner from 10 meters to put the home side 2-0 ahead.

The Olympique Marseille striker notched his second goal of the match in the 70th minute when he headed home a cross from Jeff Kenna.

Ireland took the lead in the eighth minute when midfielder Jason McAteer fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the Macedonia net from the edge of the penalty area after he had been put through by Alan McLoughlin.

Belgium 3, San Marino 0. Belgium had to settle for a 3-0 victory against unexpectedly stubborn San Marino.

Gert Verheyen opened the scoring in the 10th minute, followed by Luc Nilis 10 minutes later.

Nilis found the net again in the 46th minute before San Marino clamped down, with goalkeeper Federico Gasperoni keeping his side in the match.

Denmark 2, Greece 1. An own goal gift and a brilliant solo effort by Brian Laudrup propelled Denmark to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Greece.

A cross from Danish defender Thomas Helveg was deflected off the boot of Theodoros Zagorakis past goalkeeper Ilias Atmatsidis in the 25th minute.

But Greece equalized 10 minutes later when Georgios Donis struck a powerful free kick that pierced the Danish defensive wall, and Greece were level.

But in the 50th minute, Laudrup scored a magnificent goal, taking off solo through most of the Greek half and seeing off four pursuers before ramming the ball home.
