Hutu Faces Trial

ARUSHA, Tanzania () -- The first trial of a Rwandan Hutu charged with genocide and crimes against humanity starts here Thursday before an international tribunal.

Jean-Pierre Akayesu, 43, a former teacher and mayor of Taba in Rwanda's central Gitarama province, is accused of inciting the murder of thousands of minority Tutsis in his district during the Rwandan civil war of April to July 1994.

Akayesu has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In all, the international criminal tribunal has indicted 21 people, of whom 12 are in prison. The others are still at large.
