Helicopters Bought

BOGOTA, Colombia () -- Colombia announced the $40 million purchase of 10 Russian transport helicopters to help its military fight drug traffickers and well-armed guerrillas.

The MI17-4 helicopters constitute 40 percent of $107 million earmarked to buy helicopters to increase the mobility of the army, Defense Minister Juan Carlos Esguerra said Wednesday. The rest of the money will be spent on U.S. or French helicopters, Esguerra said.

The armored helicopters of the Russian firm Rosboroyenia are expected to arrive in Colombia within two months.
