Fat-Fight Coma Ends

SAO PAULO () -- A top model's dangerous coma after plastic surgery last week has ignited a debate about the obsession with beauty that has driven a quarter of a million Brazilians each year to seek cosmetic surgery.

Doctors on Tuesday said fashion model Claudia Liz was recovering well after waking from a four-day coma triggered by an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic she received before liposuction surgery last week.

But they said she was lucky to have avoided brain damage during the operation that took place in a fashionable but ill-equipped Sao Paulo clinic.

Now friends, family and the media are asking whether the successful, 27-year-old woman should have sought painful surgery to lose just two kilos of fat on her thighs to restore her career.

Newspapers had reported that Liz, one of Brazil's best-paid models, had been banished from the catwalks until she lost the weight gained over the past few months.
