Farrakhan Blasts U.S.

NEW YORK () -- Minister Louis Farrakhan used a two-hour speech in front of the United Nations on Wednesday, and a shorter Libyan-sponsored news conference inside, to paint the United States as an immoral superpower spreading misery across the world, starving young Arab children, enslaving black Americans with drug addiction and generally plotting against anyone who stands up against it -- especially himself and his followers.

"America leads the world in murder, in rape, in crime, in drug addiction, in prostitution," he said. "You are the most unrefined, uncultured and bestial people on the earth."

A crowd estimated by police at 38,000 gathered for a World's Day of Atonement to hear speeches by Farrakhan; the Reverend Al Sharpton; Benjamin Chavis, former head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and a message from Winnie Mandela. Mandela was not allowed to speak by her government.
