Fall in MT Index Sparked by Rumor

Leading Russian shares slipped Tuesday as jittery investors mopped their brows over President Boris Yeltsin's health, traders said.

The Moscow Times Index shed 0.5 percent to close at 132.36 in dollar terms, its first fall in seven trading sessions that have seen renewed optimism about Russia's market fundamentals.

Share prices rose in early trade on Western support, but later sank on rumors about Yeltsin's low hemoglobin, said Andrei Ippolitov, corporate securities director at IK Prospekt. Traders forecast a downward correction in prices tomorrow and a rise Thursday, mainly in second-tier issues.
