EU Avoids Labor Issue

LUXEMBOURG () -- The European Union agreed Tuesday to avoid the issue of labor standards at the world's biggest trade meeting in December, a move that diplomats said would delight its Asian partners.

EU trade commissioner Sir Leon Brittan said the 15-nation bloc would discuss labor at the World Trade Organization meeting in Singapore, but only to stress that the International Labor Organization was the best forum for the issue.

The EU has been divided over whether to raise the issue at the WTO meeting -- a move strongly opposed by developing nations that fear attempts by industrialized countries to apply Western labor standards globally would increase production costs.
