Erbakan Faces Censure

ANKARA () -- A confident Necmettin Erbakan faces a parliamentary censure vote Wednesday, the first attempt by the secularist opposition to end his brief tenure as modern Turkey's only Islamist prime minister.

Erbakan and his pro-Western coalition partners, in power little more than 100 days, have the numbers on paper to head off a no-confidence vote.

But Turkey's mounting economic, political and foreign policy problems, ignored or even aggravated by the weak coalition, virtually ensure renewed challenges to Welfare's grip on power.
