Dutch Rivals Unite

AMSTERDAM () -- Regional Dutch supermarkets chain De Boer Winkelbedrijven said Wednesday it planned to merge with unlisted sector rival Unigro to create a grocery combine ranked second only to Dutch market leader Ahold.

"The planned merger will be on equal terms ... and is expected to make a clearly positive contribution to earnings per share of the new combine ... from 1997," the two firms said in a joint statement. They said the new combine, De Boer Unigro, will rank among the top 20 Dutch companies in terms of sales, with annual turnover of more than 6 billion guilders ($3.5 billion).
