Cypriots Mourn Victim

AVGOROU, Cyprus () -- About 3,000 Cypriots on Tuesday attended an emotionally charged funeral to bury a Greek Cypriot man shot dead by Turkish Cypriot troops Sunday.

Retired Greek Cypriot fireman Petros Kakouli, 58, was lowered to his grave in a coffin draped with the Greek flag in the southeast village of Avgorou.

Turkish Cypriot troops shot him dead when he entered Turkish-occupied territory Sunday morning. His family said he was collecting snails. Turkish forces said he failed to stop when ordered to by troops and was shot while escaping.

The funeral was highly charged. One of Kakouli's two daughters, Martha, collapsed and was rushed out of church screaming. She was given oxygen and put in an ambulance.

Cypriot Finance Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou told a packed church that the killing of Kakouli was an "abhorrent murder."
