Corsican Tensions Rise

AJACCIO, Corsica () -- Conflicting calls for war and peace rang out on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica on Thursday after Prime Minister Alain Juppe vowed to crush separatists who bombed his mayoral office in Bordeaux.

The separatist group Fronte Ribellu (Rebel Front) called on the 250,000 islanders to rise up against French "aggressors," whom they branded "the hereditary enemy" in a statement sent to a news agency in Bastia.

At the same time, a moderate nationalist leader called on Corsicans to unite in a "day for peace" to restore dialogue broken in a standoff between Paris and the guerrillas.
