Contest Promises Mir Station Trip

ATLANTA -- Talk about an out-of-this-world contest.

Space Marketing Inc., an Atlanta advertising firm whose ideas have included floating billboards in space, plans a contest where the winner would travel to Russia's Mir space station.

The firm said it has reached an agreement with the Russian space agency and now is looking for a corporate sponsor.

"This agreement will enable us to place a randomly chosen civilian on board a rocket headed to the Mir space station, where he or she will spend six days and then be returned to Earth,'' said Mike Lawson, Space Marketing chief executive officer.

Space Marketing's billboard plan a few years ago failed, but some of the company's far-out stunts have worked. The company earlier this year helped Pepsi-Cola shoot a television commercial aboard Mir, and it brokered a deal to advertise an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie on the fuselage of a NASA-supported rocket launch in 1993.

The contest is planned for 1998.
