Chirac, Prodi Agree

NAPLES, Italy () -- Brushing aside reports of differences, Premier Romano Prodi and French President Jacques Chirac said Friday they agree that both Paris and Rome intend to join Europe's single currency on schedule.

Earlier Chirac had told Prodi there had been a "ridiculous misunderstanding'' over his questioning whether Italy had sound enough finances to join the "euro'' on time, Chirac's spokeswoman Catherine Colonna said.

Chirac caused a diplomatic flap Tuesday when he told French textile business leaders that the weak lira had damaged their industry and that he didn't think Italy could meet the deadline.
