CAW Begins Ford Talks

TORONTO -- The Canadian Auto Workers set a strike deadline of Nov. 6 against Ford Motor Co. of Canada as the union opened contract talks with the last of the Big Three automakers.

The union had pressured General Motors Canada with a three-week strike that ended with a deal last week. But a strike is considered unlikely against Ford because of fewer job-security issues.

The Canadian Auto Workers want Ford to follow the pattern established in its recent agreements with Chrysler and General Motors, which agreed to maintain current employment levels if any parts work is contracted out.
