Burma Lifts Barriers

RANGOON, Burma ) -- Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi responded to the military's removal of checkpoints barring access to her house on Tuesday by saying she was ready to resume her recently aborted weekly public gatherings.

"A few blockades do not constitute obstacles to democratization. We shall have to meet as long as people desire to meet," Suu Kyi told a news conference, which was held just hours after the checkpoints were removed.

The checkpoints were set up on Sept. 26 to prevent Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy from holding a party congress from Sept. 27 to 29.
