Burma Bars Americans

RANGOON, Burma () -- Burma's military government responded Friday to a U.S. decision to bar Burmese government officials from American soil by barring U.S. officials from Burma.

The moves were largely symbolic, however, as neither is closing down the other's embassy, and the governments' senior officials rarely visit one another.

President Bill Clinton issued the entry ban on Burma's rulers and their families to increase international pressure on the regime after last week's arrest of over 550 followers of democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi's political party.
